The review for this book states that you will find “revealing” photgraphs and invites you to walk into the private world of the hip hop producer, etc, etc. I was looking for a book that would give captions that at least detailed the equipment in each home studio. Instead, what you get is a bunch of nearly useless photos with no captions. Most of the photos are taken from such a deep perspective that you can’t even make out what you are looking at. My favorites are the close up picture of the torn up chair and close up picture of a sub being held together with duct tape. Those wasted close ups should have been directed towards the equipment. There are a couple of studios where pictures were close enough to see the artists racks but for the most part the pictures are way too “abstract.” I would not recommend buying this book new. You will look at it once and never pick it up again.

I bought this for my 19 yr old son who is at university studying music and technology and has produced a CD on the history of HipHop which is highly regarded(no parental preference involved) and he says this book is cool,especially the Cd inside which has some rare unavailable tracks on it.That’s it! Cool.

If you appreciate the true Hip-Hop underground and want to get a look at the studios of the best producers and DJ’s from the scene – this is the ticket. An instant classic.

knocking off one star on this book for the way they packaged the CD
it’s in a little paper sleeve attached the back inside cover of the book
Now, I like my things to stay as fresh and clean as possible and this book was a highly anticipated gift to myself. That’s where my troubles started…
I found it a bit difficult to get the CD out without practically ripping the paper sleeve open. Ever see a record sleeve that hasn’t been cut to the right size, seams all busted out and split open. Not nice. Finally found that you gotta wiggle the disk back and forth (wikki-wikki-wikki-scratch-scratch with that fragile digital disc) to get the thing out.
Just when you think you’ve got it, the little white gummy strips of industrial strength rubber tape that are supposed to keep the flap closed smear their sticky gummed up gummy gum crap all over the disk. Yum.
Ruined the CD. Won’t play at all now. Would like another one please thank you.
Warning – remove and destroy tape as soon as you buy this book before it destroys you.
I’ve got a number of books that have CDs packaged in them and this is the first one I’ve ever come across that was designed this poorly. You don’t put the gas can next to the fireplace – don’t put sticky snot like tape on a CD flap.

This book is great!.
Raph, amassed a nice volume that really captures the essence of the “home/bedroom” studio. He writes a blurb about how he encountered each DJ/Producer. Each snippet even contains a few spelling errors (normally that gets to me, but for this genre I just think it works). He puts a short discograpy of the producer, but the rest is pics. This is the best part of the book. His photography truly conveys the essence of that world we enter into when we want to create. The world we’ve made for our music that’s full of snapshots, pieces, dusty loops, and complexly configured equipment. The lab. THis book is a great gift for any hiphop head, producer, studio music lover. I had it on my Christmas/b-day list for years and no one copped it for me. So I just decided to get it myself.
My only criticism is the list of producers he didn’t put in this book. Oh well maybe a Vol. 2 is in order.

This is a great product. I definitely think that you guys developed something to be around for years. I saw the one comment about the person buying it for their son. I would definitely buy this for my son if he wasn’t two years old lmao. Yeah though great work guys and I hope to see more from you. I am going to check out the rest of the site and see what else is here. Check out my sites and catch a view of what I do with my personal home studio.
